The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is one of the most iconic locations in golfing history. In 1991 Berhard Langer and Hale Irwin engaged in the “War on the Shore” at this 10,000 acre island off the South Carolina coast, securing the areas position as the most dramatic golfing location in the world. On this stretch of coast, layouts are exposed to relentless and unpredictable winds which ensure an endless challenge and impulsive round. The natural environment is also an important factor for the courses in and around Charleston, since the local flora and fauna demonstrates nature at its most prevalent. Wildlife is abundant and the heat is always present; the courses that make up the area are the most intense and atmospheric in the world. Great courses such as Wild Dunes and the Ron Garl designed Links at Stono Ferry exhibit the pedigree of the layouts which reside at this location. Almost every legendary designer has designed at least one course here, and the RiverTown Country Club is another great example of how good Arnold Palmer’s skills really are. Additionally Charleston is well known for its historic district and numerous attractions such as Fort Sumter and the Cypress Gardens. Charleston really is as close to Mecca as golf gets.
